Medical Warnings About the Risks of E-cigarettes on Youth\u2019s Mental and Respiratory Health<\/p>\n
A comprehensive scientific review has warned of the health risks associated with e-cigarette use among children and young people, highlighting its connections to respiratory issues, as well as mental health and sleep disorders, alongside potential impacts on oral and eye health. <\/p>\n
Doctors from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health conducted a review comprising 81 studies that examined the health and social effects of e-cigarette smoking among children and young people. The review concluded that there are higher rates of coughing, wheezing, and other respiratory symptoms among e-cigarette users compared to those who do not smoke.<\/p>\n
The review, whose findings were published in the journal “Archives of Disease in Childhood,” also revealed a link between e-cigarette smoking and mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and panic disorders, in addition to sleep disorders, eye problems, and oral health issues, which include infections, ulcers, and dry mouth.<\/p>\n
Researchers pointed out evidence of potential adverse effects on children exposed to e-cigarettes and nicotine during pregnancy, such as increased abnormal reactions, reduced motor maturity, and weakened self-regulation abilities.<\/p>\n
The review further cautions about consequences extending beyond direct health harms, affirming strong evidence that young people who use e-cigarettes, and have never smoked traditional cigarettes, become more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes later.<\/p>\n
The researchers explained that scientific evidence regarding the potential harms of e-cigarette smoking is increasing, encompassing a wide range of effects on respiratory health, mental health, oral and dental health, allergies, sleep, and eyes, as well as potential risks linked to nicotine exposure during pregnancy.<\/p>\n
Professor Will Carroll, who participated in preparing the study, emphasized the necessity of avoiding treating the use of e-cigarettes among children and young people as harmless behavior or a normal part of growing up, given the growing evidence of its potential short and long-term health effects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
