The United Nations has warned of the accelerating spread of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, following the reported deaths of around 2,500 people over the past three months, amid fears that the outbreak could expand beyond the capacity of health response teams.
\nThe UN\u2019s chief Ebola coordinator said on Friday, August 21, that the virus was \u201cspreading at an accelerating pace,\u201d noting that half of the deaths recorded over the past three months occurred during the most recent 20 days, reflecting a sharp increase in the rate of transmission.
\nHe explained that the affected area now covers a vast region larger than France, while response teams are facing growing difficulties in containing the outbreak as the virus spreads faster than health efforts can keep pace in the affected areas.
\nAuthorities had announced the country\u2019s seventeenth Ebola outbreak on May 15, while medical indicators suggest that the virus may have begun spreading weeks before the official announcement.
\nThe outbreak has extended to areas in the north and east of the country, where health institutions suffer from severe shortages of resources and infrastructure, in addition to difficulties faced by medical and humanitarian teams in reaching some affected areas.
\nConcerns are growing that the crisis could worsen in regions affected by armed group activity and a weak state presence, hampering monitoring, treatment, contact tracing, and other measures needed to limit the spread of the infection.
