Portuguese President Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 Seguro has ratified a new law that forbids the covering of faces in public spaces, a measure expected to particularly impact Muslim women who wear the burqa or other face-covering garments. The ratification follows the law’s approval in the Portuguese parliament last July, with support from right-wing and far-right parties, opposed by left-wing parties, amid debate over the legislation’s implications for religious and personal freedoms.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Portuguese president remarked that the face is a fundamental element of human identity and interpersonal communication, while acknowledging the sensitive social and cultural dimensions associated with the law.<\/p>\n
The legislation, dubbed the “Burqa Law” by some local media, prohibits the wearing of clothing or the use of means that conceal the face or hinder the identification of a person in public spaces. It also bans forcing anyone to cover their face for reasons related to gender, religion, or origin and sets financial penalties for violators ranging from 150 to 3,000 euros.<\/p>\n
The law includes several exceptions, such as face coverings for health, professional, or artistic reasons, or due to climatic conditions, as well as exceptions for places of worship, diplomatic missions, and airplanes.<\/p>\n
