The United Nations Warns of Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan Due to Funding Shortages<\/p>\n
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the severe shortage of funding for humanitarian operations in Afghanistan threatens the continuation of life-saving assistance at a time when poverty and hunger rates are worsening and the population’s basic needs are increasing.<\/p>\n
The warning coincided with World Humanitarian Day, during which Amy Martin, head of the OCHA office in Afghanistan, praised the efforts and courage of humanitarian workers, affirming the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the Afghan people under the difficult circumstances facing the country.<\/p>\n
The office emphasized that limited financial resources have become a serious challenge to the ability of relief agencies and humanitarian organizations to reach those in need and provide them with essential aid. It called on the international community to strengthen solidarity and provide the necessary funding to prevent the worsening of the humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
These warnings come at a time when Afghanistan is facing complex economic and humanitarian conditions, concurrent with the reduction of international aid budgets and the local economy’s inability to meet the basic needs of broad segments of the population, due to international isolation and the structural constraints plaguing the economy.<\/p>\n
Humanitarian reports have warned that continued declines in funding could lead to increased rates of hunger and poverty, depriving more families of essential services and assistance, as well as increasing economic and social pressures on the most vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n
