Germany Cancels or Withdraws Protection from Thousands of Refugees, Most of Whom Are Syrians<\/p>\n
Official German data has revealed that the protection status was canceled or withdrawn in approximately 23 percent of asylum files that were reviewed during the first half of 2026. Most of those affected by these decisions were Syrian refugees.<\/p>\n
The German government’s response to a parliamentary inquiry by the Left Party bloc showed that authorities reviewed 8,320 asylum files during the first six months of the year, with 23.2 percent of these reviews resulting in the cancellation or withdrawal of protection.<\/p>\n
Under the applicable rules, protection status can be canceled if there is a fundamental change in the circumstances that led to the granting of asylum. It can also be withdrawn if it is proven that incorrect information was provided or significant facts were concealed at the time of application.<\/p>\n
These developments follow the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024 and the return of large numbers of Syrians to their homeland, despite ongoing security and humanitarian challenges, as well as shortages of housing and aid in several areas.<\/p>\n
Since June, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees in Germany has expanded the scope of review for Syrian files to include categories that have held protection for 21 months, as well as individuals who do not have documented special protection needs or possess support networks inside Syria.<\/p>\n
Despite these reviews, deportations of Syrians from Germany remain limited, as they require legal procedures and cooperation with Syrian authorities. Only three deportations were recorded during the first half of the current year following a limited resumption of these measures.<\/p>\n
In contrast, Claudia Bunger, an asylum affairs expert from the Left Party, criticized the trends of forced return, arguing that the situation in Syria remains unstable and called for continued protection for Syrians residing in Germany for years.<\/p>\n
Data also indicates a significant decline in asylum applications submitted by Syrians following political changes in their country. Approximately 5,000 applications were recorded during the first half of the year, coinciding with the rise in the rejection rate of applications to 68.6 percent.<\/p>\n
This comes at a time when Syrians form part of the German labor market, particularly in sectors such as retail, restaurants, healthcare, delivery services, and other fields facing labor shortages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
