RSF Warns Afghanistan\u2019s Media Regulations Have Intensified Press Restrictions Under Taliban Rule

\nIn a report marking five years since the Taliban takeover, RSF reviewed more than 20 nationwide directives, along with provincial orders and verbal instructions issued between September 2021 and January 2026. The organization said these measures have gradually restricted what journalists can report, who can appear in broadcasts and how political issues are covered.<\/p>\n
RSF said the restrictions have affected criticism of officials, women\u2019s participation in media, live political programs, guest selection, international broadcasts and the use of images of living individuals. The organization noted that early directives introduced after the takeover required media outlets to avoid content considered contrary to Islamic principles or disrespectful toward national figures, while also instructing journalists to use official terminology when referring to authorities.<\/p>\n
The report highlighted increasing restrictions on women in the media sector, including requirements for female television presenters to cover their faces and later limitations on women\u2019s voices in radio and public information programs.<\/p>\n
RSF also cited bans on rebroadcasting programs from international outlets such as Voice of America and Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty on FM frequencies, as well as rules requiring approval for guests and experts appearing on political programs.<\/p>\n
The organization raised further concerns over Afghanistan\u2019s January 2026 criminal procedures regulation, warning that broad legal provisions could be used against journalists and undermine the protection of confidential sources.<\/p>\n
