Poll: Majority of Americans Support Stricter Oversight of Social Media Companies to Protect Children

\nA new Reuters\/Ipsos poll shows that a majority of Americans support stronger government regulation of social media companies, particularly measures aimed at protecting children and teenagers from potential risks associated with online platforms.<\/p>\n
The survey, conducted over six days and completed on August 3, found that 61% of respondents believe social media companies require greater oversight and regulation. Support was recorded among both major political groups, including 71% of Democrats and 62% of Republicans.<\/p>\n
The poll also showed that 66% of Americans support laws requiring companies to use age-verification tools to limit access to social media platforms for users under 16. Support reached 74% among Republicans and 69% among Democrats.<\/p>\n
The findings come amid growing legal and regulatory pressure on major technology companies, including Meta and Google, over concerns about the impact of social media platforms on children\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n
A legal case against Meta is expected to begin this week, with several U.S. states alleging that some of the company\u2019s product designs contribute to digital addiction among young users. Meta has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n
The survey found that 85% of Americans believe social media can be addictive for children, while a similar percentage said it may negatively affect their mental health. Despite these concerns, 70% of respondents said social media provides them with some enjoyment, while only 35% viewed it as a source of stress.<\/p>\n
