UN Security Council to Review Growing Global Threat from ISIS, with Focus on ISIS-K Capabilities

\nThe United Nations Security Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss the evolving global threat posed by ISIS and its affiliated groups, following a new UN report highlighting the continued capabilities of ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K).<\/p>\n
The Council will receive briefings from the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate on Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u2019 latest strategic report on ISIS and its regional branches.<\/p>\n
According to the report, ISIS-K remains a significant security threat, maintaining the ability to organize or inspire attacks beyond Afghanistan despite pressure from the Taliban and Pakistani security forces. The group has continued efforts to rebuild operational networks and expand its reach.<\/p>\n
The report cites two recent attacks attributed by several UN member states to ISIS-K, including a suicide bombing in Kabul on January 19 and an attack targeting a Shiite mosque in Islamabad on February 6. The attacks reportedly killed 32 people and injured more than 150 others.<\/p>\n
Although ISIS has faced operational setbacks, the UN said the group has adapted by relying on decentralized regional affiliates to maintain its activities.<\/p>\n
The report identifies Africa as ISIS\u2019s main operational center, with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) remaining one of its most active branches. It also noted the expansion of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), particularly in Niger and parts of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
In Syria, the UN estimates that ISIS still has around 3,000 fighters and warns that the closure of the Al-Hol displacement camp has created additional challenges, leaving some women and children linked to the group vulnerable to radicalization.
