Timbuktu Marks 600th Anniversary of Historic Sankore Mosque

\nThe city of Timbuktu in Mali has commemorated the 600th anniversary of the Sankore Mosque, one of the country\u2019s most important historical, cultural, and religious landmarks.<\/p>\n
The two-day celebration, held on July 25 and 26, was organized by the Association of Residents and Supporters for the Development of the Timbuktu Circle (ARDCT), under the patronage of Mali\u2019s transitional president, General Assimi Go\u00efta. The event honored the mosque\u2019s long-standing role in the history of Islamic scholarship and education in Africa.<\/p>\n
Supported by several Malian ministries and UNESCO, the commemoration highlighted the importance of preserving Sankore Mosque as a major symbol of cultural heritage. Activities during the event emphasized Timbuktu\u2019s historical position as a center of learning, theology, science, and intellectual exchange.<\/p>\n
For centuries, Sankore Mosque hosted scholars and students from across Africa and the wider Muslim world, contributing to Timbuktu\u2019s reputation as a leading hub of knowledge and religious education.<\/p>\n
The mosque, along with the Djingareyber and Sidi Yahya mosques and the mausoleums of Timbuktu, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. It was also designated as national cultural heritage of Mali in 1992, reflecting its historical and universal value.<\/p>\n
During the anniversary events, Mali\u2019s Minister of Crafts, Culture, Hospitality Industry and Tourism, Mamou Daff\u00e9, called on authorities, researchers, heritage organizations, and citizens to continue efforts to protect and preserve the historic site for future generations.<\/p>\n
