Women\u2019s Movement Accuses Taliban of Violating Women\u2019s Rights and Deepening Afghanistan\u2019s Isolation

\nThe Afghan women\u2019s protest movement \u201cShams al-Hurriya\u201d (Sun of Freedom) has accused the Taliban of enforcing what it described as \u201cgender apartheid\u201d and widespread human rights violations through continued restrictions imposed on women and girls.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the group called for accountability over the denial of women\u2019s basic rights for nearly five years, including access to education, employment and participation in public life. It urged the international community to move beyond verbal condemnations and take practical measures to end what it described as systematic discrimination against Afghan women.<\/p>\n
The movement condemned the ban on girls\u2019 education beyond the sixth grade, restrictions preventing women from attending universities and higher education institutions, and the exclusion of female students from university entrance examinations. It said these measures represent a systematic effort to remove women from educational, social and public spheres.<\/p>\n
The statement warned that continued restrictions would have consequences beyond individual rights, including weakening Afghanistan\u2019s human resources, increasing poverty, expanding forced migration and deepening the country\u2019s regional and international isolation.<\/p>\n
The group said excluding women from education, employment and public participation would create long-term challenges for Afghanistan\u2019s development and affect future generations. It called on the United Nations, governments, international organisations and human rights groups to adopt coordinated actions rather than issuing statements of concern.<\/p>\n
The movement reaffirmed that Afghan women\u2019s efforts for freedom, justice and equality would continue until discrimination is ended and women\u2019s rights are guaranteed.<\/p>\n
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban has imposed wide-ranging restrictions on women and girls, including bans on secondary education, university attendance, and limits on employment, movement and public activities.
