Germany Vows to Continue Deporting Afghan Convicts in Wake of Fatal Knife Attack

\nGermany will continue deporting Afghan nationals convicted of serious crimes, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said following a fatal knife attack in the western city of Trier that allegedly involved an Afghan citizen.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Berlin on Monday, Dobrindt described the deportation of convicted criminals to countries including Afghanistan as \u201cnecessary and unavoidable\u201d and said the government would not abandon the policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cSociety has the right to expect criminal asylum seekers to be deported,\u201d Dobrindt said, according to German media reports.<\/p>\n
His comments came after a 22-year-old student was killed in a knife attack in Trier. Police arrested a 22-year-old Afghan national on suspicion of carrying out the attack. Authorities have not yet established a final motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
Initial reports said the suspect had a history of mental health problems and had previously received psychiatric treatment. The circumstances surrounding his mental health and any possible connection to the attack have not been fully established.<\/p>\n
Dobrindt said public safety must remain a priority, arguing that people with mental health disorders can also commit serious crimes.<\/p>\n
Germany has maintained technical contacts with Taliban authorities to facilitate the deportation of Afghan nationals convicted of crimes. Berlin has stressed that such contacts do not amount to recognition of the Taliban government and are limited to practical and consular matters.<\/p>\n
The policy has drawn criticism from human rights organisations and refugee advocates, who have raised concerns about the safety of Afghans returned to the country under Taliban rule.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan continues to face a severe humanitarian and human rights crisis, with international organisations reporting restrictions on fundamental freedoms, arbitrary detention and widespread poverty. Rights groups have also raised concerns over the rights of women and girls and limited access to justice.<\/p>\n
