WFP Launches First Drought Anticipatory Action Plan in South Sudan to Protect Vulnerable Communities

\nThe United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of South Sudan have activated the country\u2019s first-ever drought anticipatory action plan, providing early support to more than 65,000 people facing the risk of severe climate-related food insecurity in Eastern Equatoria State.<\/p>\n
The initiative, launched in Budi and Kapoeta North counties, aims to help communities prepare for worsening drought conditions before the full impact of the crisis unfolds. The programme includes cash assistance, early warning messages and guidance on drought preparedness, livestock management, water use and livelihood protection.<\/p>\n
WFP said cash transfers are supporting 52,751 people by helping families meet essential food and livelihood needs, maintain purchasing power and avoid harmful coping strategies. More than 65,000 residents are receiving early warning information to strengthen their ability to respond to climate shocks.<\/p>\n
Eastern Equatoria\u2019s agro-pastoral communities depend heavily on seasonal rainfall for farming and livestock, making them highly vulnerable to prolonged dry periods that can cause crop failures, livestock losses and declining household incomes.<\/p>\n
The programme was made possible through funding of $1.08 million from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and $1.37 million from Germany. Previous support from Ireland and KOICA helped establish South Sudan\u2019s drought forecasting and anticipatory action system.<\/p>\n
WFP said the initiative combines climate forecasts, early warning systems and pre-arranged funding to improve resilience among vulnerable communities and reduce the impact of future climate emergencies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
