Germany Records More Than 5,000 Heat-Related Deaths Since Start of Year

\nGermany\u2019s Robert Koch Institute for public health has reported more than 5,000 deaths linked to heatwaves since the beginning of the year, highlighting the growing impact of rising temperatures on public health, especially among older people.<\/p>\n
In its weekly report, the institute said around 5,120 heat-related deaths had been recorded, most of them occurring during the final days of June, when average weekly temperatures exceeded 20 degrees Celsius, significantly above usual levels.<\/p>\n
The report said people aged 75 and older were the most affected group, with around 4,270 deaths recorded among them. It also noted that heat-related deaths among women exceeded those among men, a difference the institute attributed to the higher proportion of women among the elderly population.<\/p>\n
The figures coincided with a broad heatwave that affected several European countries between June 20 and 28. Authorities reported more than 4,700 excess deaths above normal levels in France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands due to the sharp rise in temperatures.<\/p>\n
The findings come as climate and health experts continue to warn of the increasing risks posed by heatwaves in Europe amid the ongoing effects of climate change.
