UN Calls for More Land for Rohingya Camps After Deadly Landslides in Bangladesh

\nThe UN refugee agency has called for additional land to reduce overcrowding in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh after heavy monsoon rains triggered deadly landslides.<\/p>\n
At least 15 people have died since Monday in the camps in Cox\u2019s Bazar, while more than 4,000 refugees have been displaced, officials said.<\/p>\n
More than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees, many of whom fled Myanmar during the 2017 military crackdown, live in overcrowded camps in southeastern Bangladesh. Many shelters are built on hillsides that were cleared of trees, making the land highly vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon season.<\/p>\n
In a report issued on Thursday, UNHCR said the incidents highlight the need to optimize camp space and provide additional land where possible. The agency said more space would allow safer relocation of refugees from high-risk areas.<\/p>\n
Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR\u2019s representative in Bangladesh, said many of the dangers facing Rohingya refugees were \u201cneither unforeseen nor unavoidable.\u201d He warned that overcrowding, combined with funding shortages, limits efforts to move refugees away from the most dangerous areas and build safer infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh says it is already under heavy pressure and has repeatedly called for the safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.<\/p>\n
The 2017 crackdown in Myanmar, during which Rohingya villages were burned and civilians were killed, is the subject of a genocide case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
