\nIslamic leaders in Scotland have warned of growing anti-Muslim hate speech in Britain following a series of violent attacks in Edinburgh, saying the targeting of Muslims should not be treated as isolated incidents but as part of a wider rise in hostility toward Muslims and migrants.<\/p>\n
Tahmina Mohammed, a trustee of Broomhouse Mosque, said describing the attacks as \u201cisolated incidents\u201d ignores the nature of public discourse that portrays Muslims and refugees as the source of the country\u2019s problems. She expressed concern over what she described as unequal official and media responses to attacks targeting Muslims compared with similar incidents affecting other communities.<\/p>\n
She added that the response of politicians, police, and the media to the assaults was troubling, asking why Muslims feel they are being treated as second-class citizens despite being part of British society.<\/p>\n
Broomhouse Mosque imam Zubair Karim said he had contacted the family of one of the victims, a Muslim taxi driver, who was left deeply traumatized after being targeted by the attacker. According to the family, the attacker not only damaged the man\u2019s vehicle but also tried to physically harm him.<\/p>\n
Karim said the attacker used anti-Muslim language, adding that his actions showed a clear intention to target members of the Muslim community and harm coexistence in the city.<\/p>\n
Edinburgh witnessed a series of separate attacks on June 19 that left five people injured, including three Muslims. Other people of color were also attacked on the same day.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the attacks were carried out by 36-year-old Louis Hawkes, who used a cleaver, an axe, and other bladed weapons at several locations across the city. He reportedly began by stabbing two Muslim students after they left Broomhouse Mosque, before attacking a Muslim taxi driver and damaging his vehicle, then continuing assaults in other parts of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n
Video footage showed the attacker carrying bladed weapons and attacking several people on Leith Walk before police arrested him. Reports said he shouted anti-Muslim statements during his arrest.<\/p>\n
British authorities charged the suspect with five counts of attempted murder, along with charges of assault, robbery, breach of the peace, and criminal behavior.
