According to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, the pope said the historic milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s founding values and renew its commitment to the principles upon which the United States was established.<\/p>\n
The pontiff, who was born in Chicago, emphasized the importance of finding common ground despite political and social differences, although he did not refer directly to any political figures.<\/p>\n
Pope Leo XIV also highlighted the role of immigrants in shaping the history and future of the United States, reiterating the need to uphold the dignity and human rights of migrants.<\/p>\n
His remarks coincided with a symbolic visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa, one of the principal entry points for migrants crossing from Africa into Europe.
