Global Food Prices Fall for Second Month as Sugar, Grains, and Dairy Decline

\nThe United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has reported that global food prices fell for the second consecutive month in June, driven by lower prices for sugar, grains, and dairy products, despite continued increases in vegetable oil and meat prices.<\/p>\n
The FAO said its Food Price Index averaged 130.3 points in June, down 0.3 percent from May. However, the index remained 1.7 percent higher than the same period last year and about 18.7 percent below the record level reached in March 2022 following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.<\/p>\n
According to the FAO, cereal prices led the decline, with the cereal price index falling by 3.5 percent. Wheat prices dropped due to improved supply prospects and faster harvesting, while maize prices declined because of strong production in South America and weaker demand linked to biofuel use. Rice prices, however, rose amid stronger Asian demand and weather-related concerns.<\/p>\n
The sugar price index fell by 5.7 percent, supported by increased sugar production in Brazil following lower ethanol prices. The dairy price index also declined by 1.5 percent as production improved in the European Union and the United States, while demand for some dairy products remained weak.<\/p>\n
By contrast, the vegetable oil price index rose by 3.8 percent due to higher palm oil and rapeseed oil prices, driven by expectations of tighter supply and stronger biofuel demand. The meat price index also increased by 0.4 percent, reaching a new record high, supported by rising poultry and sheep meat prices.<\/p>\n
In its cereal report, the FAO kept its forecast for global cereal production in 2026 at around 2.983 billion tonnes, the second-highest level ever recorded despite being lower than 2025 output. The organization also projected that global cereal stocks would rise to 957.8 million tonnes by the end of the 2026-2027 season, providing some stability for global food markets despite ongoing challenges linked to energy costs, shipping, and international trade volatility.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
