UN Report: Nearly Three-Quarters of Sudanese Living Below Poverty Line

\nA UN report has revealed an unprecedented rise in poverty levels in Sudan, with 73 percent of the population now living below the poverty line amid the continuing economic and humanitarian fallout from the war that began in April 2023.<\/p>\n
The data showed that poverty rose from 45 percent in 2023 to 71 percent in November 2025, before reaching 73 percent currently. The increase marks a sharp reversal after decades of improvement, as the poverty rate had previously declined from 38.1 percent in 1990 to 15.6 percent in 2011 before gradually rising again.<\/p>\n
According to the report, around 24 million Sudanese people are living below the poverty line of three dollars per person per day. Specialists say the war has destroyed sources of income in both urban and rural areas, leaving millions without jobs or businesses and forcing many families to rely on remittances and humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
The report said worsening living conditions have pushed families to adopt severe coping measures, including reducing daily meals, consuming lower-quality food, selling possessions, sending children to work, and, in some cases, resorting to early marriage for girls due to economic hardship.<\/p>\n
Citizens also reported that rising prices for essential goods and services, along with higher costs for water, electricity, transport, education, and healthcare, have made it extremely difficult to meet daily needs. Many families now spend almost exclusively on food while giving up most other necessities.<\/p>\n
Economic expert Inas Ibrahim warned that Sudan\u2019s economic conditions may continue to deteriorate unless comprehensive economic and political reforms are implemented. She called for greater support for productive sectors, especially agriculture and related industries, as well as increased exports and the removal of fees and obstacles facing producers.<\/p>\n
Experts also stressed the need for development policies that promote social justice and protect citizens\u2019 rights to education, healthcare, and water, while expanding microfinance and vocational training programs to support youth and boost production.<\/p>\n
Ezzeddin Al-Safi, former commissioner-general of the Social Security and Solidarity Commission, said fighting poverty is the main gateway to achieving sustainable development.
