Yemeni Calligrapher Continues Tradition of Handwriting Holy Quran

\nYemeni calligrapher Ali Qasim continues to preserve one of the oldest Islamic arts from his home in the capital, Sana\u2019a, by copying the Holy Quran by hand and maintaining a centuries-old tradition that combines artistic mastery with scholarly precision in writing the words of Allah Almighty.<\/p>\n
Qasim dedicates long hours each day to writing Quranic verses, using pen and ink according to the rules of the Uthmani script, which he says remains the approved foundation for writing the Quran due to its linguistic, rhetorical, interpretive, and recitational significance.<\/p>\n
He explained that copying the Quran differs from any other calligraphic work, as it requires careful attention to the harmony of pages and verses, the beginnings and endings of surahs, and full adherence to the rules of the Uthmani script. This, he said, requires years of training and experience.<\/p>\n
The Yemeni calligrapher said he went through several trials to choose the best types of paper and pens before beginning the work. He currently uses paper specially designed for Quran writing, made to prevent ink from passing through to the other side of the page, ensuring quality and accuracy.<\/p>\n
Qasim said his main motivation is his connection to the Book of Allah Almighty, along with his desire to develop his talent in Arabic calligraphy. He described completing a full handwritten copy of the Holy Quran as one of the greatest achievements any calligrapher can aspire to.<\/p>\n
Arabic calligraphy teacher Khaled al-Ward said copying the Holy Quran has long been one of the greatest ambitions of calligraphers, representing the highest level of creativity in the art. He noted that recent years have seen the emergence of several Yemeni calligraphers who take pride in serving the Quran through calligraphy.<\/p>\n
Despite Yemen\u2019s difficult economic conditions, a number of calligraphers and artisans continue to preserve this deep-rooted Islamic heritage and pass the skills of handwriting the Holy Quran to new generations, helping protect one of the most important artistic and cultural traditions of Islamic civilization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
