Morocco Restores 2,200 Mosques Since Launch of Rehabilitation Program

\nMorocco has restored a total of 2,200 mosques since the launch of the program for rehabilitating closed mosques in 2010, with a total budget of 3.87 billion Moroccan dirhams, Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq said on Monday in Rabat.<\/p>\n
The minister said rehabilitation work is currently under way in 505 mosques at a total cost of around 1 billion dirhams, while 136 other mosques are in the study and permit phase, with a budget of 168 million dirhams.<\/p>\n
Despite these efforts, Toufiq said 1,485 mosques remain closed and require nearly 2 billion dirhams for rehabilitation. He explained that around 586 mosques are closed each year on average following regular inspections of their condition under the supervision of regional and local authorities.<\/p>\n
Regarding mosque infrastructure in remote areas, the minister said 1,544 closed rural mosques have already been rehabilitated out of a total of 3,183, at a cost of nearly 2 billion dirhams.<\/p>\n
He added that work is ongoing in 397 rural mosques, with an investment of about 652 million dirhams, while the ministry is working to secure funding to rehabilitate the remaining 1,121 mosques.<\/p>\n
Toufiq said the ministry allocates nearly 296 million dirhams annually to mosques in rural areas, representing 41 percent of its investment budget.
