In Mahajanga, Madagascar, centers affiliated with the Shirazi religious authority held Husseini mourning ceremonies during the first ten days of Muharram 1448 AH. The programs included the recitation of Ziyarat Ashura, religious lectures, and speeches highlighting the reformist and humanitarian values of the Husseini uprising.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s ceremonies in Mahajanga also featured the unveiling of a model depicting the martyrdom of Ali al-Asghar, peace be upon him. In Afghanistan, thousands of Shia Muslims commemorated Ashura in Kabul, Herat, Kandahar, and Lashkar Gah despite restrictions imposed by the Taliban. Ceremonies were held in mosques, Husseiniyas, and religious centers, while reports indicated that public displays of mourning were limited in several cities.<\/p>\n
In Kandahar, hundreds gathered at Fatima Mosque, where Ashura ceremonies coincided with a blood donation campaign. Mosque officials said around 300 mourners donated blood for the Kandahar blood bank.<\/p>\n
The Afghan Shia Scholars Council said Taliban members had arrested some mosque and Husseiniya officials over mourning banners and symbols, and had removed black flags from several religious sites.
