UN Warns 2025 Saw Record Grave Violations Against Children in Conflict

The United Nations has warned of an unprecedented rise in grave violations against children in conflict zones, saying 2025 saw the highest documented toll since the establishment of the UN Children and Armed Conflict mandate.<\/p>\n
During a Security Council open debate, Vanessa Frazier, the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, presented findings from the Secretary-General\u2019s annual report. She said the UN verified 38,558 grave violations affecting 24,174 children in 2025.<\/p>\n
The report found that, for the first time, government forces were responsible for the majority of grave violations against children, including killing and maiming, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access.<\/p>\n
Killing and maiming remained the most common violations, affecting 14,224 children, including 6,266 killed and 7,958 injured. The UN also verified 8,322 incidents of denial of humanitarian access, 6,607 cases of recruitment and use of children, 5,129 abductions, and 1,783 cases of rape or other forms of sexual violence. A total of 3,176 children were subjected to multiple grave violations, and about one-third of the victims were girls.<\/p>\n
The highest levels of violations were recorded in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Myanmar, and Somalia.<\/p>\n
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said the figures represent only part of the reality, as many violations go unreported due to insecurity, access restrictions, fear of reprisals, and the difficulty of documenting abuses in active war zones.<\/p>\n
The UN called on all parties to conflicts to stop violations against children, protect schools and hospitals, allow safe humanitarian access, ensure accountability, and support reintegration programs for affected children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
