UN resolution pushes accountability for peacekeeper attacks

\nThe UN \u200cSecurity Council on Tuesday adopted a resolution aimed at strengthening accountability for attacks on UN peacekeepers, amid concern over rising violence and low prosecution rates.<\/p>\n
The move follows a series of deadly incidents targeting UN personnel, including the killing of seven peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon after a \u200cfresh round of \u200cfighting broke out between \u200cIsrael \u2060and Hezbollah in early \u2060March.<\/p>\n
The resolution, drafted by Denmark and Pakistan and co-sponsored by 152 countries, passed unanimously.<\/p>\n
It urges countries hosting UN peacekeepers to take \u201call necessary measures\u201d to investigate and prosecute those responsible for attacks \u2060on UN personnel.<\/p>\n
It says prosecution \u200crates have remained \u200clow and that accountability is essential to \u200cprevent future attacks.<\/p>\n
While reaffirming that host \u200cstates bear primary responsibility for the safety of UN personnel, it urges all parties to cooperate with investigations.<\/p>\n
The text asks the UN \u200csecretary-general to designate \u201ca senior focal point\u201d within the UN to \u2060coordinate \u2060efforts to improve accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.<\/p>\n
