US Warns of Possible Mass Atrocities as RSF Encircles Sudan\u2019s el-Obeid

\nThe United States has expressed alarm over reports that Sudan\u2019s Rapid Support Forces and allied groups are encircling the city of el-Obeid, warning that any assault could lead to mass atrocities and further deepen the country\u2019s humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued Monday, the US State Department said the RSF was \u201cmassing forces\u201d around el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, and called on all parties to pursue a negotiated solution to Sudan\u2019s ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n
The department warned of \u201calarming indications\u201d that atrocities could be imminent, urging the RSF and its allies to stop any actions that could endanger civilians, obstruct humanitarian aid, or worsen civilian suffering.<\/p>\n
Washington also called on the warring sides to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and ensure that people seeking safety are able to move without fear or obstruction.<\/p>\n
The warning comes as Sudan\u2019s war between the army and the RSF continues into its fourth year. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, creating one of the world\u2019s worst humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n
The United Nations has also raised concern over the situation in el-Obeid, warning that around 500,000 civilians could be at risk if the RSF launches an attack.
