India Declares 10th of Muharram a Public Holiday in Most States to Mark Ashura

\nSeveral Indian state governments have declared the 10th day of the holy month of Muharram, corresponding to June 26, 2026, as an official public holiday in most parts of the country, coinciding with the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and the martyrs of the eternal tragedy of Karbala.<\/p>\n
The holiday will include government institutions, ministries, official departments, schools, colleges, national banks, post offices, and financial markets across India. <\/p>\n
Indian states and cities with large Muslim populations are making extensive preparations to mark Ashura.<\/p>\n
In Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, historic Husseiniyas are preparing to receive thousands of mourners, while mourning processions are set to pass through the city\u2019s streets under special security and organizational measures to ensure smooth movement and the safety of participants.<\/p>\n
Hyderabad, in Telangana, will also witness the famous \u201cBibi Ka Alam\u201d procession, with large numbers of believers expected to take part, alongside mourning gatherings and centers distributing water and food to participants and visitors.<\/p>\n
In Kashmir and several other states, preparations are continuing for Husseini gatherings and mourning processions, while local authorities are working to provide medical services, ambulance teams, and logistical support along procession routes.<\/p>\n
Indian authorities confirmed that intensified security and organizational measures have been put in place to secure Ashura events, including the deployment of additional security forces, the activation of modern surveillance systems, and continuous coordination with committees organizing processions and mourning gatherings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
