Shia Rights Group Warns of Restrictions on Muharram Rituals in Gulf States

\nThe International Organization for the Defense of Shia Rights (Shia Rights Watch) has expressed concern over what it described as escalating restrictions on Shia religious freedoms in some Gulf states ahead of the month of Muharram.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the organization said it had received documented reports of Hussainiyas and mosques being closed, and of Husseini rituals being restricted even in private homes. It described the measures as a serious violation of religious freedom, equal citizenship and international human rights commitments.<\/p>\n
The group said Shia communities are an integral part of Gulf societies and have contributed to national development and social stability. It condemned what it called the targeting of Shia citizens\u2019 religious identity and warned against using religious rituals as a tool in political disputes.<\/p>\n
The organization urged the governments concerned to reverse the restrictions, reopen places of worship and stop pursuing citizens over peaceful religious practices.<\/p>\n
It also called on decision-makers to adopt policies that protect all communities without discrimination, warning that exclusionary measures could deepen social tension and harm long-term stability.<\/p>\n
