Iraq Prepares for Muharram Mourning Season

Iraq\u2019s holy city of Karbala and the capital Baghdad have begun early preparations for the month of Muharram, as mourning groups and service processions prepare to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, peace be upon him.<\/p>\n
In Karbala, Husseini processions and service mawkibs have started setting up tents, mourning pavilions and support stations across the city\u2019s streets. Organizers said preparations for Muharram and Safar begin early each year to receive mourners and serve pilgrims arriving from Iraq and abroad.<\/p>\n
The Imam Hussein and Al-Abbas holy shrines have also been covered with black banners and mourning signs, marking the approach of the season of grief. The black decorations have been placed across walls, corridors and courtyards in preparation for Ashura commemorations.<\/p>\n
Local reports said the shrines are preparing for major rituals linked to the 10th of Muharram, including the replacement of the red flags above the two holy domes with black flags, symbolizing the start of the mourning season.<\/p>\n
Preparations are also under way for large crowds expected to take part in Ashura rituals, including the Tuwairij Run and other mourning processions. Security, health, transport and service bodies are preparing plans to organize the movement of visitors.<\/p>\n
Similar preparations have been reported in Holy Najaf from the Custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali, peace and blessings be upon him.<\/p>\n
In Baghdad, the atmosphere has also turned visibly Ashura-themed. Husseini associations, takiyas and mawkibs across the capital have raised black mourning flags and installed banners of grief in preparation for receiving mourners.<\/p>\n
Public squares and main roads in Baghdad have also seen the installation of symbolic displays and models recalling the tragedy of Karbala, reflecting the spirit of mourning ahead of the days commemorating Imam Hussein, peace be upon him.<\/p>\n
Mawkib organizers said their service includes providing food, accommodation, clothing and other support to pilgrims and mourners.
