Israeli Explosive Weapons Accounted for Over Half of Civilian Deaths Globally in 2025, Monitor Says

\nMore than half of civilian deaths caused by explosive weapons in 2025 were attributed to the Israeli military, according to a new report by Explosive Weapons Monitor.<\/p>\n
The report, released last Wednesday, said more than 22,600 civilians were killed by explosive weapons across 65 countries last year. The figure marked a 21 percent decrease from 2024, largely due to ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.<\/p>\n
Despite the decline, the monitor warned that civilian harm remained severe, with 56 percent of all recorded civilian deaths from explosive weapons attributed to Israeli armed forces.<\/p>\n
In 2025, Israel carried out military operations in Gaza and Lebanon and launched attacks in other areas, while also fighting a 12-day war with Iran in June.<\/p>\n
The report identified Iran, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Myanmar, Ukraine and Sudan as among the hardest-hit areas. It also said state armed forces were responsible for 85 percent of all recorded incidents that caused civilian harm or damage.<\/p>\n
The monitor also warned of growing threats to civilian infrastructure and essential services. It said attacks involving explosive weapons that affected humanitarian aid increased by 52 percent in 2025, with around 90 percent of those incidents recorded in the Palestinian territories.<\/p>\n
Katherine Young, research and monitoring manager at Explosive Weapons Monitor, said civilian suffering caused by explosive weapons in populated areas has become persistent across conflicts worldwide, warning that such harm risks becoming normalized on a massive scale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
