Drone Strikes on Sudan\u2019s El-Obeid Kill Up to 23 People, Rights Group Says

\nDrone strikes on the central Sudanese city of el-Obeid have killed up to 23 people and wounded several others, according to Al Jazeera citing local officials and a Sudanese rights group.<\/p>\n
The overnight attacks hit several areas of the city, a key hub in the Kordofan region, including residential neighborhoods, a funeral gathering, a food truck and locations near army positions.<\/p>\n
The local rights group Emergency Lawyers said 23 people were killed and 19 others injured. Health officials at el-Obeid Hospital gave a lower toll, saying 15 people were killed and more than 10 wounded.<\/p>\n
Emergency Lawyers blamed the Rapid Support Forces for the attack, but the paramilitary group did not immediately claim responsibility. The allegation could not be independently verified.<\/p>\n
The strikes come less than a week after a drone attack on the main market in Abu Zaeima, a town in North Kordofan, killed at least 11 people and wounded dozens. No side claimed responsibility for that attack.<\/p>\n
Drone warfare has become increasingly prominent in Sudan\u2019s conflict, which began in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. The United Nations said in May that at least 880 civilians had been killed in drone strikes across Sudan between January and April.<\/p>\n
Fighting has intensified in Kordofan and Blue Nile state in recent months, as both sides battle for control of strategic routes linking Darfur, central Sudan and the east.<\/p>\n
