Ebola Cases in DR Congo Rise to 635 as Outbreak Spreads to New Health Zone

\nHealth authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have reported a sharp rise in Ebola infections, with the number of confirmed cases reaching 635 and the death toll climbing to 127.<\/p>\n
The latest figures mark an increase from earlier reports that put the number of confirmed infections at nearly 600 and deaths at more than 115. The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, was declared on May 15 and has since spread across eastern parts of the country.<\/p>\n
According to health officials, the outbreak has now reached 26 health zones, including a newly affected zone in Tchomia, in the northeastern province of Ituri. The province remains the epicenter of the crisis, accounting for the vast majority of confirmed cases.<\/p>\n
Authorities reported 37 new confirmed cases and 12 additional deaths within 24 hours, all in Ituri. The outbreak is also affecting North Kivu and South Kivu, regions already struggling with insecurity, displacement and cross-border movement.<\/p>\n
International and local health teams are continuing efforts to contain the virus, while treatment centers in Bunia and Rwampara are caring for patients.
