WHO Reports One in Eight People Globally Lives with a Mental Health Condition

\nThe World Health Organization (WHO) has raised urgent concerns over the escalating global mental health crisis, reporting that more than one billion people worldwide\u2014about one in eight\u2014currently live with a mental health condition.<\/p>\n
This issue was highlighted ahead of the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, where mental health is one of over 75 items on the agenda. Young people are among the most affected, while men face higher rates of suicide and women disproportionately experience anxiety and depression. Globally, a person dies by suicide every 43 seconds, underscoring the severity of the crisis.<\/p>\n
Despite the magnitude of the problem, mental health remains chronically underfunded, with median government spending accounting for only 2% of national health budgets. Mental health disorders affect emotions, thoughts, and behavior, and are classified into several categories by WHO and the DSM-5. Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, lead to prolonged periods of sadness or mood swings.<\/p>\n
Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and phobias, are characterized by persistent fear or worry. Psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia, involve delusions and hallucinations, while trauma-related disorders like PTSD arise from exposure to life-threatening events.
