The government issued a statement declaring that the national mourning would begin on Wednesday, May 6 at midnight and continue until Saturday, May 9. The official mourning period is dedicated to the \u201cmartyrs\u201d who lost their lives during terrorist attacks that took place on May 4 and May 6, respectively.<\/p>\n
The attack on May 6 follows an earlier Boko Haram assault on the Barka Tolorom military base near Lake Chad on May 4, which led to the death of at least 24 soldiers. While the army reported that a \u201csignificant number\u201d of attackers were also killed in the assault, it highlights the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region.<\/p>\n
The Lake Chad Basin, a region shared by Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Niger, has long been a hotspot for Boko Haram activity, including kidnappings, attacks on military personnel, and clashes with security forces. In October 2024, Boko Haram\u2019s attack on a military base in the region resulted in nearly 40 Chadian soldiers being killed, prompting President Mahamat Deby to launch a counteroffensive against the group aimed at eliminating Boko Haram\u2019s presence in Chad. Although the operation was declared a success by the army in February 2025, claiming the militants had \u201cno more sanctuary on Chadian territory,\u201d attacks on security forces have persisted.<\/p>\n
