\nUK scientists have created a new predictive health tool designed to pinpoint which people are most likely to develop serious obesity\u2011related conditions, offering potential improvements in early intervention and personalised care.<\/p>\n
The model, known as OBSCORE, was developed using data from nearly 200,000 participants in the UK Biobank study \u2014 all of whom were overweight or living with obesity \u2014 and analyses 20 commonly collected health measures such as blood test results, age and cholesterol levels.<\/p>\n
Published in the journal Nature Medicine, the research shows the tool can predict a person\u2019s 10\u2011year risk of developing up to 18 serious conditions linked to excess weight, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and various chronic illnesses. The OBSCORE model groups individuals into five risk categories per disease, helping clinicians identify high\u2011risk patients even where traditional measures like Body Mass Index (BMI) alone may be insufficient.<\/p>\n
Scientists emphasise that people with similar BMI can have very different health trajectories; some overweight individuals may face higher risks for disease than those with higher BMI but healthier metabolic profiles. The tool\u2019s machine\u2011learning approach could thus allow more targeted monitoring and early treatment, potentially easing pressure on health services like the NHS by focusing resources on those most at risk.<\/p>\n
