UK warns commercial spyware now used by over 100 countries, raising global security concerns

\nBritish cybersecurity officials have warned that the rapid spread of commercial spyware is posing increasing risks to privacy and data security worldwide, with more than 100 countries now believed to possess such tools.<\/p>\n
According to a forthcoming report by the National Cyber Security Centre, access to cyber-espionage technology has become significantly easier, heightening the risk of targeting individuals, businesses, and critical infrastructure both in the UK and globally. The number of countries using these tools has reportedly risen from about 80 in 2023 to around 100.<\/p>\n
Much of the software is developed by private firms such as NSO Group, known for its Pegasus system, and Paragon Solutions, which produces Graphite. These tools exploit vulnerabilities in devices to access sensitive data.<\/p>\n
While some governments say spyware is used to combat crime and terrorism, human rights groups have documented cases of it being deployed against journalists, political opponents, and public figures. UK officials also noted a growing trend of targeting business leaders and financial figures.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the CYBERUK conference, NCSC chief Richard Horne warned that many British organizations underestimate the threat, adding that major cyberattacks often originate from hostile states, including actors linked to China.<\/p>\n
