According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake initially measured around magnitude 7.5 before being revised to approximately 7.7. The quake occurred at around 4:53 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of roughly 10\u201320 kilometres beneath the seabed, off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.<\/p>\n
Authorities issued immediate tsunami warnings for parts of northeastern Honshu and Hokkaido, with initial projections of waves reaching up to 3 metres. Residents in multiple coastal areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution.<\/p>\n
However, observed tsunami waves were significantly lower than feared, reaching about 80 centimetres in some locations. The warnings were later downgraded to advisories and eventually lifted after assessments showed no major threat.<\/p>\n
The tremor was widely felt across northern Japan and as far as Tokyo, disrupting transportation services, including temporary suspension of bullet train operations and road closures in affected areas.<\/p>\n
