Human Rights Group Urges Bahrain to End Restrictions on Shia Religious Practices

\nAmericans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) has condemned what it describes as escalating restrictions on the religious practices of the Shia community in Bahrain, urging the government to uphold international standards on freedom of religion and belief.<\/p>\n
In a statement presented on March 17 at the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, ADHRB criticized repeated limitations on Shia religious observances, particularly during significant religious periods such as Ashura and Sha\u2019ban. The organization warned that patterns of interference and enforcement actions against participants in religious events persist and have a chilling effect on freedom of worship.<\/p>\n
ADHRB cited examples where authorities allegedly intervened in religious activities, including the removal of religious symbols and the arrest or questioning of individuals taking part in observances. The group said these actions have occurred in various localities and reflect a broader trend of restrictions affecting Shia Muslims in the country.<\/p>\n
The group also referenced longstanding concerns about treatment of Shia religious life in Bahrain, including past reports of disruptions to religious gatherings, mosque closures, and limitations imposed on Shia prisoners with respect to their rites. ADHRB characterized these policies as part of a pattern of discrimination that has continued since unrest in the country beginning in 2011.<\/p>\n
