\nHundreds of Muslim organizations in Canada have voiced opposition to the accelerated passage of a proposed \u201canti-hate\u201d bill, warning it could have unintended consequences for religious freedoms amid ongoing political debate.<\/p>\n
In an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney, the National Council of Canadian Muslims stated that the proposed amendments to the legislation remain \u201cinsufficient,\u201d pointing to what it described as \u201cfundamental flaws\u201d in the bill\u2019s text.<\/p>\n
The proposed legislation, known as Bill C-9, aims to strengthen protections for places of worship against intimidation by introducing new offenses related to obstructing access. It also seeks to include certain symbols associated with extremism under hate speech laws.<\/p>\n
While the bill has received support from some groups, including Jewish organizations, civil society and human rights groups, along with Muslim organizations, have raised concerns about potential restrictions on protests and the difficulty of distinguishing between banned symbols and cultural or religious expressions.<\/p>\n
Criticism intensified following a political agreement that led to the removal of so-called \u201creligious defenses\u201d from the bill, a move opponents argue could impact freedom of religious expression.<\/p>\n
Justice Minister Sean Fraser defended the proposal, stating that religious freedoms are protected under the Charter and emphasizing the government\u2019s willingness to introduce further amendments to ensure that religious, educational, and political discussions are not affected.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Khaled Al-Qazzaz, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council of Canada, said the community had previously conveyed its concerns directly to the prime minister during a prior meeting.
