The groups called on the new Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration, which assumed office after a landslide election in February, to address arbitrary detentions, hold perpetrators of past abuses accountable, and dismantle the Rapid Action Battalion. They also emphasized protecting ethnic and religious minorities and safeguarding the rights of over a million Rohingya refugees in the country.<\/p>\n
The letter highlighted the need to establish an independent National Human Rights Commission and implement reforms to strengthen accountability, rule of law, and freedoms such as religion and expression.<\/p>\n
During the election campaign, the BNP had pledged to enhance protections for economic, social, and environmental rights, including increased resources for health, education, and social security.
