UN Chief Says Security Council Struggles to Stop Conflicts Amid Escalation in Lebanon

\nAnt\u00f3nio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said the United Nations Security Council lacks the effectiveness needed to halt major global conflicts, citing repeated use of veto powers by member states, Arab News reported.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a press conference in Beirut at the end of a visit to Lebanon, Guterres said the council faces \u201ca problem of legitimacy and efficiency,\u201d noting that vetoes often prevent action during conflicts. He added that the structure of the body still reflects the global order established after World War II and does not adequately represent today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n
His remarks came amid escalating hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, which have led to Israeli airstrikes, mass displacement, and growing concerns about a wider regional conflict.<\/p>\n
Guterres emphasized that diplomacy remains the only viable path to ending the violence, saying there is no military solution to the crisis. He said UN officials are working with international partners to promote de-escalation and bring the parties to negotiations.<\/p>\n
During the visit, the UN chief met Lebanese leaders and launched a $325 million humanitarian appeal to support people displaced by the conflict. He also confirmed that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will continue operating along the Lebanon-Israel border despite rising tensions, while warning that attacks on peacekeepers violate international law.<\/p>\n
