Syrian Alawite Supreme Council Condemns Use of \u201cRemnants\u201d Label to Justify Killings, Intimidation

\nThe Syrian Alawite Supreme Council has issued a strong statement rejecting the use of the term \u201cal\u2011fulul\u201d (\u201cremnants\u201d) to justify systematic killings and intimidation carried out by the de facto authorities in Syria and affiliated armed factions against Syrian Alawite civilians in the coastal region and Homs Governorate.<\/p>\n

In its statement, the Council said that \u201cevents over the past year have shown no evidence of what is referred to as \u2018remnants\u2019 in any areas inhabited by Alawites, nor has there been any retaliatory violent activity by members of the Alawite community in response to violations against them.\u201d On the contrary, the Council added, Alawites have adhered to peaceful civil struggle for their legitimate rights through nonviolent demonstrations and sit\u2011ins.<\/p>\n
The statement accused the Syrian authorities of recently intensifying what it called \u201cterroristic policies\u201d against Alawites, pursuing provocative escalation \u2014 notably in the rural area of Jablah District \u2014 in an attempt to draw them into \u201ccounter\u2011violence\u201d and distract from the anniversary of brutal massacres committed by factions linked to the de facto authority on 7 March of last year, which the Council says killed thousands of Alawite civilians.<\/p>\n
The Council also alleged that authorities have exerted pressure on families of victims to extract coerced testimonies to suppress the truth and impose justificatory narratives. It cited a recent case involving a person referred to as Abu Alaa Nabil Youssef, who was reportedly pressured to change his account in exchange for the release of victims\u2019 bodies.<\/p>\n
The Council called on the international community and states concerned with the Syrian crisis to continue pressing the authorities to uphold their commitments to all Syrians and to expedite a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 and 2799.
