Global Survey Finds Surge in Violence and Abuse Against Politicians, Threatening Democracy

\nA new global survey by the Inter\u2011Parliamentary Union (IPU) has revealed a significant rise in violence, threats and harassment against elected officials in more than 80 countries, with online abuse driven in part by new technologies such as artificial intelligence raising serious concerns about the future of democratic participation.<\/p>\n
Conducted in 2025, the IPU study surveyed lawmakers in more than 80 countries and included detailed responses from 519 elected officials in Argentina, Benin, Italy, Malaysia and the Netherlands. According to the findings, 71\u202f% of respondents reported experiencing violence or threats from the public, particularly in digital spaces, indicating a broad escalation in public hostility toward political representatives.<\/p>\n
The report highlights that women politicians are disproportionately targeted, especially with sexualized abuse and online attacks, reflecting deeper gender\u2011based risks within the political sphere.<\/p>\n
IPU Secretary\u2011General Martin Chungong told a United Nations press briefing that the situation is \u201cvery acute\u201d in some countries, including the United States, where high\u2011profile incidents such as physical attacks and threats against public figures have been reported.<\/p>\n
The union warned that new technologies are amplifying anonymity and abuse online, making it easier for perpetrators to threaten and intimidate lawmakers. Many officials surveyed said they had become more cautious about public statements because of safety concerns, with potential implications for free speech and democratic engagement.<\/p>\n
