\nAmnesty International has warned that human rights conditions in the United States have significantly deteriorated one year after President Donald Trump returned to office, citing what it describes as a growing pattern of authoritarian practices.<\/p>\n
In a report released on Tuesday titled Ringing the Alarm Bells: Rising Authoritarian Practices and Erosion of Human Rights in the United States, the organization said the Trump administration has increasingly restricted civic space and weakened the rule of law, with consequences for fundamental freedoms at home and abroad.<\/p>\n
Paul O\u2019Brien, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said the country is facing a \u201cdangerous trajectory\u201d that has already resulted in what he described as a human rights emergency. He warned that the concentration of power and erosion of democratic norms have increased risks for journalists, protesters, lawyers, students, and human rights defenders.<\/p>\n
The report identifies 12 interconnected areas of concern, including attacks on freedom of the press, peaceful assembly, academic freedom, and due process. It also documents measures affecting migrant and refugee rights, the expansion of surveillance, the use of militarized policing, and efforts to undermine judicial independence and accountability mechanisms.<\/p>\n
Amnesty said these practices reinforce one another, making abuses harder to expose and accountability more difficult to enforce.
