The condition, caused by genetic mutations, leads to thickening of the heart muscle and affects millions worldwide, with outcomes ranging from mild symptoms to life-threatening complications.<\/p>\n
Currently, there is no cure for HCM and doctors cannot reliably predict which patients will develop serious problems such as heart failure or dangerous heart rhythm disorders. Researchers from institutions including Harvard and Oxford say a new testing approach could help address this gap by improving early risk assessment and patient monitoring.<\/p>\n
In a major study involving 700 patients, scientists measured levels of a heart-related protein known as NT-Pro-BNP. Elevated levels were linked to poorer blood flow, increased scarring of heart tissue and structural changes associated with higher risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure, indicating the protein\u2019s potential as a predictive marker.<\/p>\n
