Germany\u2019s population could decline by nearly 10 million by 2070 as large aging cohorts are replaced by much smaller generations, according to new projections released by the country\u2019s statistics office, Reuters reported. The forecast indicates that by 2035, one in four residents will be older than 67, with the number of people of pension age expected to reach almost 21 million by 2038 \u2014 around 27% of the population.<\/p>\n
The outlook comes amid severe labour shortages and heightened political debate over immigration, which has fuelled support for the far-right Alternative for Germany in recent polls. Officials warn that demographic pressures will place increasing strain on the country\u2019s social welfare system. Currently, Germany has 33 pensioners for every 100 workers; in the worst-case scenario, this ratio could rise to 61 by 2070.
