Canada removes Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism

\nCanada has officially removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, Anadolu Agency reported citing the country\u2019s Foreign Ministry\u2019s statement on Friday.<\/p>\n
The statement said the measures align with recent decisions by the UK and US, and follow Syrian transitional government efforts to advance stability, build an inclusive future, and work with global partners to counter terrorism.<\/p>\n
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was one of the most powerful armed groups opposing Bashar al-Assad\u2019s forces during Syria\u2019s civil war, and Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria\u2019s president in the wake of Assad\u2019s ouster, served as the group’s head.<\/p>\n
Canada\u2019s Foreign Minister Anita Anand said the country welcomes “positive steps” taken by the Syrian government “towards a peaceful Syrian-led political transition” since the end of the Assad regime a year ago.<\/p>\n
Syria welcomed Canada\u2019s move, calling it \u201ca positive and constructive development\u201d that acknowledges the harm caused by sanctions “on the lives of the Syrian people and on the country’s vital sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Syria\u2019s Foreign Ministry said the step \u201cmarks an important milestone in advancing Syrian-Canadian relations\u201d and opens the door to \u201ca new phase of multifaceted cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Damascus also reiterated its readiness to work with international partners and engage in dialogue supporting economic recovery and reconstruction \u201cin a manner that serves the shared interests of regional and international security and stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Canada continues to maintain sanctions on 56 Syrian entities and 225 individuals, mainly targeting former Assad regime officials, though Ottawa introduced limited relief measures. This February, the Foreign Ministry issued a general permit \u2013 valid until Feb. 23, 2026 \u2013 temporarily easing certain economic sanctions.<\/p>\n
