Residents in Afghanistan\u2019s southern Kandahar province say unexploded ordnance left from decades of conflict continues to endanger communities, particularly children, Amu TV reported. Landmines, mortar shells and other remnants of war remain scattered across fields, villages and waterways, posing a severe risk to daily life.<\/p>\n
One resident who lost both legs after stepping on a mine eight years ago, is among thousands still suffering long-term consequences of war. Another resident said his young relative was recently killed after accidentally triggering an explosive, highlighting that children often become the most vulnerable victims.<\/p>\n
Local communities report that dangerous devices are still visible in open areas, and little to no support has been provided for clearance operations. One villager recounted throwing away a rocket to prevent children from touching it, noting that no organization has come to remove such weapons.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan is considered one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Despite progress in clearing contaminated zones, large rural regions \u2014 including Kandahar \u2014 remain unsafe.
