The development follows UK Biobank\u2019s completion of metabolic profiling for 500,000 volunteers, measuring nearly 250 proteins, fats, sugars and other molecules in their blood.<\/p>\n
These detailed molecular profiles, when combined with health records, allow scientists to forecast the risk of conditions including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dementia. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a real gamechanger,\u201d said Dr Joy Edwards-Hicks of the University of Edinburgh, noting that early detection could shift healthcare toward prevention.<\/p>\n
The profiles include sugars, amino acids, fats and hormone precursors, which reflect how the body processes food, uses energy and repairs tissues. Changes in these metabolites can signal organ dysfunction\u2014such as rising urea in kidney damage or elevated lactate in muscle injury.<\/p>\n
Because metabolites are influenced by both genetics and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and pollution, researchers say the profiles provide a dynamic snapshot of overall health.
