\nSayyida Zaynab bint Ali (peace be upon them both) was born on 5th of Jumada al-Awwal, and was the granddaughter of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family) and daughter of Imam Ali and Lady Fatima (peace be upon them both). She is revered as the Sayyida (lady) of the family and \u201cheroine of Karbala.\u201d <\/p>\n
Shia tradition ascribes many honorifics to her \u2013 for example Zaynab al-Kubr\u0101 (\u201celder Zaynab\u201d), \u02bfAq\u012blatu Ban\u012b H\u0101shim (\u201csage of Banu Hashim\u201d) and Umm al-Yat\u0101m\u0101 (\u201cmother of orphans\u201d). Devotional sources call her Baligha (eloquent) and al\u012bmah ghayr al-mu\u02bfallimah (\u201cknowledgeable without being taught\u201d). She is also famed as the \u201cMountain of Patience\u201d for enduring great sufferings throughout her life.<\/p>\n
In Shia theology Sayyida Zaynab (peace be upon her) is a model of piety and courage \u2013 \u201ca symbol of sacrifice, strength, and piety\u201d and a role model for Muslim women.<\/p>\n
Classical accounts, like Maq\u1e6dal al-\u1e24usayn and Bih\u0101r al-Anw\u0101r emphasize her pivotal role at Karbala in 680\u202fCE. When her brother, Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) and most of his male relatives were martyred by the Umayyad army, women and children of his camp \u2013 including herself \u2013 were taken captive to Kufa and then marched to Yazid\u2019s court in Damascus. In Damascus she delivered a famous sermon condemning Yazid, exposing his tyranny and heresy, and publicized the Karbala tragedy to echo its enduring message. These acts cemented her legacy as the \u201cheroine of Karbala\u201d and as a stalwart defender of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them).<\/p>\n
