A teacher from Bournemouth has been permanently banned from teaching after being found guilty of mocking the religion and culture of Muslim pupils during class discussions, 5Pillars reported.<\/p>\n
The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) issued the decision following a misconduct hearing that found Alex Lloyd, a former teacher at The Bishop of Winchester Academy, made repeated insensitive comments during a 2022 lesson on honour killings. The panel said his remarks targeted pupils from specific cultural and religious backgrounds, leaving several visibly distressed.<\/p>\n
According to the hearing, Lloyd told one student the topic was \u201ca serious matter affecting their culture\u201d and asked another to imagine if their mother were killed. He also suggested honour killings occurred mainly within their culture and made further comments linking female genital mutilation and dress codes to Muslim societies. Despite admitting to most remarks, Lloyd defended his behaviour as factual and relevant.<\/p>\n
The panel concluded he lacked professionalism, empathy, and cultural awareness, showing no remorse for the impact on his students. TRA member Sarah Buxcey ruled that Lloyd be permanently prohibited from teaching.
