Global Coal Use Hits Record High Despite Rise in Renewables

Coal consumption reached a record high worldwide last year, despite growing efforts to transition to clean energy. The State of Climate Action 2025 report, published on Wednesday by the World Resources Institute (WRI), warned that continued reliance on coal is jeopardizing global targets to limit warming to 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n
Although coal\u2019s share in electricity generation declined as renewable energy expanded, overall demand for power increased, driving total coal use higher. The report found that global efforts to phase out coal remain \u201cwell off track\u201d for the fifth consecutive year.<\/p>\n
Clea Schumer, a research associate at WRI, said that while progress is being made, \u201cwe are just not moving fast enough.\u201d The report emphasized that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 requires rapid electrification of industries and transport, supported by a low-carbon power system.<\/p>\n
Some major economies, however, continue to invest in coal. India celebrated surpassing one billion tonnes of production, while in the United States, president Donald Trump has renewed support for fossil fuels. Meanwhile, China and the European Union are maintaining momentum toward renewables.<\/p>\n
The report highlighted exponential growth in solar and wind power, with solar described as \u201cthe fastest-growing power source in history.\u201d Yet, renewable growth rates must double this decade to meet emission goals. It also warned that deforestation and industrial emissions remain critical challenges, as more than eight million hectares of forest were lost in 2024.
